Avon Type Frangible Rounds
This option consists of replacing
the water with a ceramic slug of equal weight that,
for the 20mm, can disarm pipe bombs up to two inches
in diameter. The 20mm Avon-type frangible rounds
weigh approximately 60 grams.
How to employ the AVON-TYPE
frangible round
The cartridge which contains the primer and propellant
as well as the frangible round, is inserted into
the barrel in the usual manner. (See Operating Manuals
for NEUTREX) The Venturi in the front of the barrel
is replaced with the thread protector so as to protect
the thread of the barrel in the event of the unit
falling over during recoil. No liquid should
be placed in the barrel when the frangible round
is employed. Normal aiming procedure is
followed.
NOTE: to decap pipe bombs the aim should be approximately
l2 degrees to the pipe axis from about l" (25mm)
back from the pipe cap itself. The impact will slightly
dent the pipe, and the slug will slide along the
pipe body and hit the cap on its rim and remove
it.
For 20mm disrupter: the frangible round is designed
to open pipe bombs and to penetrate extremely hard
containers. Upon impact, the projectile mass exerts
the energy on to the target and disintegrates into
powder. This eliminates the possibility of fragments
ricocheting and causing collateral damage and injury.
It is possible to decap pipes of up to 4" (l0 cm)
employing this method.
WARNING: If target is missed, frangible round
must be considered as a threat similar to that of
a solid projectile and a standoff distance of 3/4
mile (1 km) should be allowed.
