| VERSATRAX is a unique
and versatile remotely operated pipe inspection
system. While it has a variety of applications,
the system has been designed primarily
for operation inside municipal sewer line
and storm drain networks. With it's powerful,
remotely operated transporter and quality
color video system, VersaTrax delivers
impressive results.
The system transporter
is based on the Inuktun MiniTrac units.
These tracked units are precision machined
from solid brass stock and are fitted
with high quality, powerful gear-motors
and vulcanized deep lug tack belts.
Each unit is completely independent
of the other, providing the system with
excellent steering and manoeuvering
capabilities.
The camera housing and
mounting hardware components are fabricated
from marine grade aluminum with stainless
steel fasteners used throughout the
assembly. Each track unit and the camera
housing are sealed and rated for submerged
operation to a depth of 100 ft / 30m.
A unique feature of the
Versatrax system is that it can be reconfigured
for operation in a variety of pipe sizes.
This feature allows the operator to
use the same equipment for a wide range
of inspection tasks resulting in a substantial
savings in both time and equipment inventory.
*Inline
configuration for pipe sizes from
6" to 12"
Operation in smaller diameter
pipes, 6 to 8 in (15 to 21 cm), is accomplished
using flexible connecting hardware that
allows the tracks and camera to be mounted
in-line. In this configuration the tracks
are configured with side bumpers that
act as abrasion guards for the cable harness
as well as stabilizers to assist in preventing
the tracks from tipping over inside the
pipe. The flexible joints allow the unit
to negotiate bends and obstacles as it
travels through the pipe. UHMW skids are
also provided for the front mounted camera
housing to assist in keeping it centered
in the pipe. The MiniTracs system transporter
is not steerable in this configuration.
*Parallel Configuration
for 36" pipe
Operation in larger diameter
pipes, from 10 to 36 in (25 to 91cm),
the system is assembled in the more conventional,
side by side, configuration and is steerable.
Mounting brackets have been designed for
use in pipes having normal inside diameters
of: 10 in (25 cm), 12 in (30 cm), 15 in
(38 cm), 18 in (46 cm), 20 in (51 cm),
24 in (61 cm), and 36 in (91 cm). In these
configurations, the tracked units are
mounted at an angle, allowing them to
travel along the sides of the pipe. In
addition to providing optimum traction,
this feature also serves to keep the tracks
clear of obstacles and material lying
in the bottom of the pipe.
Operating over a durable
1000 ft / 300 m multi-conductor umbilical,
or tether cable, the Versatrax system
provides quality video images and is
supplied with a power supply and integrated
computer video monitoring and control
system providing fully proportional
speed and directional, computer keyboard
control for the MiniTracs transporter,
variable intensity lights, and remote
focus function. Additionally, this system
provides the capability for video monitoring
and on-screen text generation via the
computer monitor as opposed to video
monitoring using a separate video monitor
and external text generator.
Tether management and
storage is accomplished using an electrically
driven, variable speed cable reel.
The colour video camera
provides a composite video signal in
the NTSC video format that can
be connected to commercially available
video recording equipment. In addition,
the system incorporates the Versatrax
Video Data System; a computer based
system providing the operator with the
capability to provide on-screen text
data, superimposed over real-time video
images obtained during pipeline inspections.

Video Data System
Program One:
- Real-time video
image display on the computer
monitor
- Fully proportional
speed and directional control
of the MiniTracs transporter via the
computer keyboard.
- On-screen graphics,
superimposed over the video image,
illustrating relative power and directional
control applied to the MiniTrac units.
- Computer control
of light intensity and remote focus
function.
- On screen display,
superimposed over the video image
of video inspection report text and
data.
- Verstrax Video
Data Inspection Reporting Program.
Features include
- 8 Title Screens
- Title screens can be made
up and edited by the user and
stored to disc. Individual title
screens can be called up and displayed
at any time during the inspection.
- Formatted
Inspection Data Screen - A
pre-formatted data screen that
allows the operator to fill in
the blanks with respect to information
such as client name, pipe use,
size, diameter, loaction, etc.
Inspection report and video tape
file number, date and time are
automatically inserted during
this process.
- On-Screen
Distance Counter Display - Displays
a continuous, running total of
distance travelled, based on the
amount of cable payed out or taken
in on the cable drum.
- On-Screen
Time/Date Display - Provides
continuous display of time and
date.
- 10 Predefined
Messages - Predefined messages
generally based on frequently
used remarks related to pipe condition,
can be established and edited
by the user and stored to disc.
Messages can be called up with
one keystroke and displayed at
any time during the inspection.
- On-Screen
Text Editor - Allows the user
to type on-screen messages or
descriptions, overlaid on the
video image.
- Help Screen
- The user can access the
help screen at any time during
operation.
Program Two:
- Includes all Program
One Features (described above) plus:
- Printed Inspection
Report - During the inspection
process, the computer retains all
the on-screen information generated.
Upon completion of the inspection
the operator may, through simple keyboard
commands, cause a formatted inpsection
report to be printed. (If the video
images are being video taped, all
of the on-screen text information
will be recorded as well.)
